Zermatt
On the Italian border of the canton of Valais in the west of Switzerland, at the end of the 30 km-long Nikolaital, lies Zermatt, the village at the foot of the Matterhorn, the most photographed mountain in the world. For our guests from all over the world, Zermatt epitomizes their image of Switzerland: high-alpine, awe-inspiring and original. Almost one-third of the 4,000-metre mountains in the Alps are grouped around this word-famous health resort, which has been visited by mountaineers from all around the world since the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. The hotels and restaurants are world-class, and the ski area is not only the highest in the Alps – it is also one of the best developed and most convenient in the world, ensuring thrilling sporting experiences on the steepest slopes in the world – and that 365 days a year. The climate is of an excellent quality: with 300 sunny days a year, there is less rainfall than anywhere else in Switzerland. The air in Zermatt is clear, dry and clean, because, since 1947, only electric cars without a combustion engine are allowed to operate in the village. Things are a little different in Zermatt. Zermatt – A world of its own.
How to get there
By train
The railway has direct connections in Brig and Visp to the modern narrow-gauge railway of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which arrives in Zermatt after an hour and a half ride through the rugged and romantic Nicolaital valley.
The new Lötschberg base tunnel from Frutigen (BE) to Raron (VS) significantly shortens the journey time to Zermatt by train.
- from Zurich approx. 3 h 12 travelling time
- from Basel approx. 3 h 13 travelling time
- from Bern approx. 2 h 07 travelling time
Zermatt is also the beginning or the end of the world-famous Glacier Express (St. Moritz / Davos - Zermatt).
By car
Zermatt is car-free. Private traffic is only permitted up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt), and the road between Täsch and Zermatt is also closed to private transport.
Various car parks (2,900 spaces; 2,100 of them in the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch) and uncovered parking spaces (900 spaces) are available to you in Täsch. Some of the multi-storey car parks also have outside parking spaces, and offer a taxi service to and from Zermatt.
The shuttle trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway run between Täsch and Zermatt every 20 minutes. You can conveniently and directly transfer to the modern shuttle trains in the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch. The train journey ends 12 minutes later at the Bahnhofplatz in Zermatt – at the heart of the Matterhorn village.
